Associated Schools Project Network background documents
- Navigators for Peace: ASPnet Historical Review 1953-2003. Quality Education for the 21st Century, Auckland, New Zealand, 3-8 August 2003. Ko nga Kaiwhakatere mo te Rangimarie. SUMMARY: The booklet covers history of ASPnet since its post-WW2 inception and follows its steps from 1953 when ASPnet network included only 33 schools through its recognition, expansion and innovation years that culminated in the network of 7400 schools in 2003. Each chapter in the booklet represents a decade of ASPnet history talking about the major theme of the period, most important initiatives and lessons learned.

SUMMARY: The results of a review commissioned to examine the working and impact of the network of UNESCO ASPnet after 50 years of their operation. The report categorises findings at the school, national and international level and provides recommendations on the basis of these. The report also provides an analysis of key issues and directions for the future. The Annex contains country profiles summarising the ASP network in 85 countries.

SUMMARY: The document includes report on the work of the congress (review of achievements, future challenges and flagship projects and partnerships) and the plan of action for 2004-2009, the key point of which is announcing ASPnet’s overarching goal as quality education for all in pursuit of justice, liberty, peace and human development. Annexes include speeches from the Director General of UNESCO, Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Education and Director of the Division for the Promotion of Quality Education
- Regional Workshop of the UNESCO Associated Schools Programme Network, World Heritage in Young Hands and The Global School Initiative ‘Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger’. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 22-26 March 2004.
SUMMARY: Report of the workshop includes background, objectives and results. Among other results, the Regional Plan of Action for ASPnet was drafted, flagship projects were presented and follow-ups were examined. The booklet provides a useful summary and views from different representatives on the ongoing and new projects of ASPnet. The document includes a copy of the action plan and a list of participants. The document is available in 2 languages, English and Spanish.

Summary: The Seville Statement on Violence is a scientific statement which says that war and violence are not a biological necessity, therefore peace is possible. The statement was written in 1986 for the International Year of Peace sponsored by the UN. The booklet explores why statement on violence was needed, the history of the statement and its propositions as well as listing its authors and supporting organisations. It also analyses the relation of struggle and violence and concludes with the methods of teaching peace education
- Young People Speak Out on Quality Education. Edited by Elizabeth Khawajkie. 2005. pp. 56.

Summary: The booklet contains views from students around the world on quality education, including their views on education in the globalizing context, teachers, learning, curriculum, social inclusion and gender equality. Each chapter contains verbatim comments from students with a short summary in the end. Very powerful as one can see consensus views, even though students come from countries thousands of miles away.

Summary: 2003 was the International Year of Freshwater and the Focus section of the magazine contains a report on the role of water in the context of sustainable development, human rights and international relations. Particular attention is paid to Argentine, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Spain. There is also a section on facts, figures and curiosities about water.

- Focuses for Peace in the Modern World: a Contribution for the 40th Anniversary of the UN. With foreword by David Ennals. Pp. 98.
SUMMARY: The book is a great short introduction to the arena of international organisations, covering the basic facts about the UN and major campaigning and informational organisations. It also includes a glossary of terms widely used in international affairs and a selection of quotes and anecdotes on the theme of international relations and politics.
- UN decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014 (leaflet).

SUMMARY: Gives a nutshell description of sustainable development and bullet points on what can be done to make it happen. It also talks about specific goals of the decade, the main implementation focus of the decade and expected challenges. It also defines the role of UNESCO as the lead agency for the promotion of the decade. The particular relevance to education is described in the section on good practices.

Summary: This is one of the most important UN documents, can be a starting point for education about Human Rights issues.
- The Millenuium Development Goals: progress, reversals and challenges. From United Nations Development Programme. 2003.

SUMMARY: The paper provides the background and political framework to the Millenium Development Goals. The booklet gives the timeline of when the goals will be achieved in the context of progress to date. It gives the list of goals and targets, which are illustrated with a useful statistical tables and charts that provide a wealth of information on world poverty, education, gender equality, child mortality, HIV and water sources among other information. Each goal is supplemented by a short paragraph on the importance of the goal in a specific part of the world. The booklet is in English and French and contains an excerpt on from the Human Development Report 2003 ‘Why do the Millenium Development Goals Matter?’
