The L’Oréal UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women In Science are awards offered by L’Oréal UK & Ireland with the support of the UK National Commission for UNESCO, the Irish National Commission for UNESCO, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET. The awards promote, celebrate, enhance and encourage, the role and achievements of women pursuing their research careers in the UK or Ireland in the fields of the life or physical sciences.
Four Fellowships are awarded each year to outstanding women scientists at postdoctoral level to enable promising scientific research in the life or physical sciences. The Fellowships, each worth £15,000 (equivalent € for candidates in Ireland), are tenable at any UK or Irish university or research institute to support a 12-month period of research.
The award can be spent in innovative ways to enable women scientists to pursue and continue their research careers – such as buying equipment, paying for childcare or funding travel costs to an overseas conference.
2009 AWARDS
The winners of the four 2009 L’Oreal UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women In Science were announced on 1 July 2009 at an awards ceremony at the Royal Institution in London.
On the occasion of the awards, Baroness Susan Greenfield, chair of the judging panel, highlighted recent research by the UK Resource Centre (UKRC) which demonstrates how necessary support at the early career stages really is. The UKRC’s review of recent research literature shows that women are still less likely to advance to senior positions in academia in science, engineering and technology (SET) disciplines and that postdoctoral research remains a key point of attrition.
The judging panel for 2009 comprised Baroness Greenfield CBE (chair), Professor Alec Boksenberg CBE FRS; Professor Patrick Cunningham; Dr Nancy J. Lane OBE; Dr Julie McManus; Vivienne Parry; and Professor Sir Mark Walport.
