All National Commissions of a very same region meet once every two years for a REGIONAL CONSULTATION.

Members make suggestions on UNESCO's Medium-Term Strategy (Draft C/4 Document) and on the next biennium's Programme and Budget (Draft C/5 Document), thereby starting the process of UNESCO's Programme elaboration.

In 2006, the consultation meeting for the "Europe and North America" region will be hosted by the Greek National Commission (in Athens) on June 25-28.

The UK National Commission for UNESCO was represented by Professor Alec Boksenberg (Chair and Chair of Natural Sciences Committee), Ms Sue Davies (Chair of Culture Committee) and Mr Bob Doe (Education Committee) and participated actively in the process. 

2006 Regional Consultation : Athens (June 25-28, 2006)
Professor Alec Boksenberg (Chair of the UK National Commission for UNESCO; also Chair of the Natural Sciences Committee), Ms Sue Davies (Chair of the Culture Committee) and Mr Bob Doe (Member of the Education Committee) attended the 2006 Regional Consultation.

Mr Andreas Westerwinter (Deputy UK Permanent Delegate to UNESCO) attended as an observer.

* The summary of deliberations at the 2005 October General Conference highlights issues on which Member States were invited to provide guidance and direction, including the scope of UNESCO’s future action; the linkage between UNESCO’s strategy and programmes; the reflection of UNESCO’s mission and functions; the approach to strategic objectives for UNESCO’s programmes; the selection of cross-cutting themes and intersectoral approaches; as well as the results-based approach, which is reflected in the formulation of “expected outcomes” for each strategic objective.
