Celebrating International Days

Throughout the year the United Nations marks International Days in order to raise awareness of particular issues such as the International Day for Biodiversity, or to draw attention to successes and to help celebrate achievements such as the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Marking International Days is a great way of bringing the global perspective to life  in the classroom and engaging students with issues that affect people across the globe. UNESCO Associated Schools in the UK have teamed up with UNA-UK to develop factsheets and suggested activities to help you mark the days at the primary and secondary level.

Universal Children's Day - 20 November

Celebrated each year on 20 November, Universal Children’s Day is observed throughout the world to promote the welfare of children. Understanding the needs of children, as well as ensuring that their basic rights are respected, is fundamental not only to safeguarding the well-being of children but also to creating a more secure, just and sustainable planet.

United Nations Day - 24 October

Simply put, United Nations Day is the birthday of the UN – an international organisation that strives to improve the lives of people everywhere. Created in the aftermath of the Second World War, the UN’s founders hoped that it would help to prevent a repeat of the destruction by stabilising international relations and giving peace a more secure foundation.
