Education for Sustainable Development in Scotland

The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development began on January 1, 2005 and aims to promote education as a basis for a more sustainable society and to integrate sustainable development into education at all levels and all areas of life including communities, the workplace and society in general.

The Scotland Committee, through its partnership with Learning & Teaching Scotland and other civil society organisations, is supporting the Government in mainstreaming ESD at all levels of formal and informal education. In August 2006, the Scottish Executive published an Action Plan - Learning for our Future - setting out the first wave of actions to be taken in Scotland over the first five year period in support of the UN Decade.

The Scottish Government has now  launched an Action Plan - Learning for Change - setting out the actions to be taken forward in the second half of the Decade. This is supported by supporting sections on schools, universities and colleges, and Community Learning and Development. This was developed  by the government with partners and stakeholders through the UN Decade Action Plan Steering Group, stakeholder events in the UKand 2009 UNESCO World Conference on ESD.
