Engineering Education in Africa

Chair: Professor Tariq Durrani / Petter Matthews

The Working Group for Engineering Education in Africa works to enhance the engineering capacity of sub-Saharan Africa.

Engineering is an integral part of efforts to tackle challenges such as poverty, climate change and insecurity. The Group recognises the importance of educating Africa’s engineers of tomorrow so that they are able to address global and local issues of direct relevance to their context and meet emerging needs.

The Group proposes for a radical re-thinking of the engineering curriculum offered to students in sub-Saharan African institutions to align it with regional/national socio-economic priorities and long term development requirements and to ensure that it is relevant, fit for purpose and of direct benefit to the region/host country and economy. The Group will work with African-based partners who have identified a need to improve engineering education policy and practice to develop innovative solutions on a pilot project scale.

The UK National Commission for UNESCO has received expressions of interest (EoIs) from African based educational institutions and other organisations working in engineering education, to work with us in a partnership aimed at improving engineering education in sub-Saharan Africa.
