16 November 2010

Venue: The British Academy, 10 Carlton Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH

The UK National Commission for UNESCO and the British Academy are pleased to announce a lecture to be held at the British Academy on Tuesday 16th November 2010 to be given by Professor Gudmund Hernes President, International Social Science Council on the 2010 World Social Science Report and implications for Social Science over the coming decade.

The report emphasises the huge disparities in research capacities across countries and the fragmentation of knowledge that hamper the capacity of the social sciences to respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow. Professor Hernes will consider the opportunities and challenges that such inequalities and asymmetries present in the context of economic, social and cultural globalisation.

The Lecture will be co-chaired by Professor W. John Morgan, Chair of the UK National Commission for UNESCO and Professor Duncan Gallie, Foreign Secretary and Vice-President of the British Academy.
