UNITWIN UK UNESCO Chairs Colloquium 2008

The topic for the colloquium will be ‘Higher Education and International Development: The contribution of UNESCO Chairs’.
The inaugural colloquium of the UK National Commission’s UNESCO Chairs Group will take place at the University of Nottingham, 17th-18th January, 2008, hosted by the UNESCO Chair of the Political Economy of Education and Centre for Comparative Education Research.
REPORT
24 participants, comprised of both existing and prospective UNESCO Chair-holders in the UK, and guests including Dr Pat Dolan, NUI Galway, as part of his involvement in establishing the first UNESCO Chair in the Republic of Ireland, examined the role of higher education in international development in the context of the UNESCO Cairs/UNITWIN Programme. Presentations were given by the UNESCO Chairs in the UK, on the contribution of the Chairs to international development, as well as presentations by Professor Alec Boksenberg, Chair of the UK National Commission for UNESCO, and Mr Georges Haddad, Director of the Division of Higher Education, UNESCO HQ.
The colloquium highlighted the importance of the UNESCO Chairs network as a think-tank and arena for inter-university cooperation and transfer of knowledge.
