For Women In Science Fellows Share Experiences at Science Museum 'Lates'

Four UK and Ireland For Women In Science (FWIS) Fellows joined members of the public at this month’s Science Museum ‘Lates’ event to talk about their scientific research and share their experiences as women in science.

Ashleigh Griffin (2008 FWIS Fellow), Elizabeth Murchison (2009 FWIS Fellow), Araxi Urrutia (2007 FWIS Fellow) and Patricia Alireza (2009 FWIS Fellow) provided fascinating insights into their work on the behaviour of bacteria living in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients, transmissible cancers in Tasmanian Devils, human gene and genome evolution and the effects of high pressure at quantum level.

The interactive sessions also explored what it is like to be a woman in science – fellows shared their own journeys and discussed a broad range of issues with science enthusiasts including inspirational role models, overcoming barriers to continuing a career in science, and the all-important ingredients of a passion for science and discovery, self-confidence, support and commitment.

The L’Oréal UNESCO For Women In Science programme was founded 12 years ago by L’Oréal and UNESCO on the premise that ‘the world needs science and science needs women’.  The awards programme is designed to promote and highlight the critical importance of ensuring greater participation of women in science, by awarding promising female scientists with fellowships to help them further their research.

The UK and Ireland FWIS Fellowships are offered annually through a partnership of L’Oréal UK and Ireland, the UK National Commission for UNESCO, Ireland National Commission for UNESCO and the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

Science Museum Lates is the exciting adults only event, held once a month, that invites you to experience the Science Museum after hours. If you want an entertaining free night out, Lates is the place to be.
