Meeting for European National Commissions Concludes

Representatives of forty-three National Commissions for UNESCO of the Europe and North America Region attended a four-day consultation that took place in London from Saturday 5 June to Tuesday 8 June 2010. The event, hosted by the UK National Commission for UNESCO, debated and made recommendations on UNESCO priorities, programme and budget for 2012-2013. The conference took place in the Great Hall of the Institution of Civil Engineers at One Great George Street, the original setting and birthplace of UNESCO.

On the opening day of the consultation delegates unanimously expressed their strong belief in the vision of UNESCO, their wish for it to become a more effective and valued agency at national, regional and global level and their readiness to contribute to this task.

At the beginning of the debating phases of the Consultation the UNESCO Director General, Mrs Irina Bokova addressed the conference. She recalled that 65 years ago in the same Great Hall in London, UNESCO was established as an organisation to enable free and mutually enriching exchange of ideas and achievements and sharing of creative skills and knowledge among peoples of the world.

The Consultation was arranged in a World Café format that used a series of debating phases, each covering the five major programme areas: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information; as well as the inter-sectoral platforms. Following these discussions, a Draft Final Report was presented and amendments agreed on.

Similar Regional Consultations are being held with National Commissions around the world in four additional meetings subscribing Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia Pacific and Arab States. The reports of these Consultations play an important part in developing UNESCO’s work programme for 2011-2012.

The 2012 Regional Consultation of National Commissions of Europe and North America will be hosted by the Commissions of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.
