Next generation of female scientists honoured amid UK science renaissance
The winners of the four 2010 L’Oreal-UNESCO UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women In Science were announced on 30 June 2010 at an awards ceremony held at the Royal Institution in London. The Fellowships are awarded annually by L’Oréal UK & Ireland, the UK and Irish National Commissions for UNESCO and the Royal Institution of Great Britain.
The 2010 winners, who were selected by a panel of eminent scientists, chaired by Baroness Susan Greenfield, are:
- Dr Lourdes Basabe-Desmonts, Research Fellow, Dublin City University, for her research into developing a novel technique to analyse and screen stem cell differentiation
- Dr Dora Biro, Royal Society University Fellow, University of Oxford, for her research into whether birds can learn travel routes from one another
- Dr Pia Mukherjee, Research Fellow, University Of Sussex, for her research into the origin and potential fate of the Universe
- Dr Nathalie Pettorelli, Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, for her research into how effective terrestrial protected areas are in conserving the world’s major ecosystems
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science programme was founded by UNESCO and L’Oréal to help promote and ensure greater participation of women in science. The UK and Ireland-level fellowships, now in their fourth year, offer awards to outstanding female postdoctoral researchers. The £15,000 fellowships have been designed to provide practical help for the winners to undertake research in their chosen fields.

The 2010 UK and Ireland awards come at a time when female scientists are achieving more recognition for their work. The number of female scientists honoured by the Queen has increased three and a half times since 2000. Science is also at its most popular with girls making up more than half of all students studying sciences at GSCE level, with science coming out top as school girls rate their favourite subjects.*
The UK and Ireland judging panel for 2010 comprised Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE (chair), Professor Alec Boksenberg CBE FRS; Dr Gail Cardew; Julie McManus; Professor Luke O’Neill; Professor Gillian Gehring and Professor Anne Glover CBE.
* Research taken from a OnePoll survey of 2,000 children aged between 5 and 18
