Potential Centres of Excellence in Journalism Training

In 2007 UNESCO undertook an extensive study to assess journalism training institutions in Africa. The resulting report, Criteria and Indicators for Quality Journalism Training Institutions & Identifying Potential Centres of Excellence in Journalism Training in Africa, mapped the capacity and potential of 100 journalism schools across Africa and identified 21 institutions with the potential for further development. The report was launched in March 2008 at a UNESCO consultation meeting at Rhodes University, Grahamstown.

The UK National Commission for UNESCO (UKNC) is working to make a practical contribution towards the study’s recommendations by:

  • bringing together some of the identified African training institutions and their UK counterparts
  • supporting potential centres of excellence participation at key events, such as specialist training workshops
