Science is a major pillar of the international response to today’s and tomorrow’s challenges including climate change, poverty eradication and sustainable development.
In Scotland, the UK National Commission for UNESCO’s (UKNC) work in the area of science focus on water policy and science, technology and engineering for development and wild landscapes and mountains. Scotland offers rich and unique natural and human resources whcih contribute to these objectives, including:
- The UNESCO-IHP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee
- A UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Mountain Development and a UNESCO Chair in International Development
- Half of the UK’s Biosphere Reserves, which help translate principles of sustainable development into locally relevant contexts, making them a liveable reality
- Three Geoparks, nationally protected areas with outstanding geological heritage
- World class research and teaching institutions and Universities
