South Sudan becomes 194th UNESCO Member State

South Sudan became UNESCO’s newest Member State on 27 October, bringing UNESCO's membership to 194 Member States and 8 Associate Members.

At a flag raising ceremony at UNESCO to mark the occasion, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport for South Sudan, Cirino Hiteng Ofuho said, “the new Republic of South Sudan vows to become an active member of UNESCO and the global family of nations.”

The UNESCO Constitution is deposited with the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as the founding meeting of the organisation was held in London in November 1945. To this day, new countries which join UNESCO sign the organisation’s original constitution.

On 14 July 2011 the UN General Assembly voted by acclamation to admit the Republic of South Sudan as a Member State.
