Tell the world about your documentary heritage

Nominations are being sought for documentary heritage which holds cultural significance specific to the UK. As part of the second round of nominations to the UK Memory of the World Register anyone can make a nomination and all archive formats are eligible, including digital and audiovisual. The deadline for nominations is January 31 2011.

The UK Memory of the World Register is designed to help raise awareness of the UK’s exceptional documentary riches by awarding them with the globally-recognised Memory of the World status. The UK Register includes documentary heritage which holds cultural significance specific to the UK. The Register is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World programme, which helps promotes outstanding documentary heritage around the globe.

The first inscriptions to the UK Register were made in July 2010. These items and collections come from across the country, span nearly 1000 years of history and embody the pivotal moments and periods that have shaped the UK. Discover these items and collections here.

The opening of nominations coincides with World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, an international day which calls attention to the value of audiovisual records and the urgent need to preserve them. The mission of the Memory of the World programme closely aligns with this Day. Find out more about UNESCO’s activities to mark World Day for Audiovisual Heritage here.
