Top UK and Ireland Women In Science Announced

The winners of the four 2009 L’Oreal-UNESCO UK and Ireland Fellowships For Women In Science were announced on 1 July 2009 at an awards ceremony at the Royal Institution in London.

On the occasion of the awards, Baroness Susan Greenfield, chair of the judging panel, highlighted recent research by the UK Resource Centre (UKRC) which demonstrates how necessary support at the early career stages really is. The UKRC’s review of recent research literature shows that women are still less likely to advance to senior positions in academia in science, engineering and technology (SET) disciplines and that postdoctoral research remains a key point of attrition.

The judging panel for 2009 comprised Baroness Greenfield CBE (chair), Professor Alec Boksenberg CBE FRS; Professor Patrick Cunningham;  Dr Nancy J. Lane OBE; Dr Julie McManus; Vivienne Parry; and Professor Sir Mark Walport.
