UK Hosting Meeting for European National Commissions

Representatives for 45 European and North American National Commissions will gather in London on 5-8 June to take part in the Director-General’s Regional Consultation with National Commissions for UNESCO. The event, hosted by the UK National Commission for UNESCO, will debate and make recommendations on UNESCO priorities, programme and budget for 2012-2013.

The Consultation will take place in the Great Hall of the Institution of Civil Engineers at One Great George Street, the original setting and birthplace of UNESCO. In her first official visit to the UK as UNESCO Director-General, Ms Irina Bokova will address the delegates in a special session on 6 June.

Harry Reeves, Secretary-General for the UK National Commission for UNESCO said: “We look forward to welcoming our European and North American colleagues. This is a great opportunity for National Commissions to help shape the priorities and work of UNESCO for the next two years.”

On Monday 7 June, the UK National Commission for UNESCO will host a reception in the Painted Hall at Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Delegates will also have a guided tour of the Royal Observatory. Maritime Greenwich was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 and is recognised for its cultural heritage and scientific accomplishments.

The Consultation with the European and North American National Commissions will follow similar meetings of the four other UNESCO regions being hosted by the National Commission of Morocco (Arab States), Republic of Korea (Asia and Pacific) and subsequent meetings hosted by the National Commissions of Trinidad and Tobago (Latin America and the Caribbean) and Uganda (Africa).
