UK National Commission for UNESCO announces new Secretary-General

The United Kingdom National Commission for UNESCO is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Harry Reeves OBE as its Secretary-General from 1st January, 2010.

Harry Reeves is currently Deputy Director, Culture, Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) where he has been responsible for policy on architecture and the built and historic environment since September 2004. His duties include the UK’s responsibilities as a party to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and policy lead on other cultural/heritage conventions.

He holds degrees in economics from Birmingham and Leeds Universities and was a teacher and lecturer for 16 years, mostly of economics and politics.  He managed a community centre in inner city (Birmingham) for 4 years from 1978 to 1982.
Harry Reeves joined the civil service in 1991. His first post was in sport policy where he was a founding member of the then Department of National Heritage in 1992. He developed proposals for the Department’s regional presence in 1994/95, then worked in Tourism Policy from 1995 to 1997, mainly on international issues.

Following this post he was Head of General Broadcasting Policy 1997-99, principal DCMS author of the green papers on the regulation of broadcasting which paved the way for the current regulatory reforms. He was then Head of Sport and Recreation Division in DCMS from July 1999 to April 2003 followed by Head of Tourism Division April 2003 to September 2004.

He was awarded the OBE in 2009 for public and voluntary service.
