UK Schools Featured in UNESCO Publication
The Education for Rural Livelihoods and Food Sovereignty (ERLAFS) project, involving six members of UNESCO Associated Schools in the UK, has been featured in the UNESCO publication ‘Second Collection of Good Practices: Education for Sustainable Development’.
The Collection of Good Practices will be launched during the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, taking place in Bonn, Germany this week (31 March – 2 April). The project, coordinated by Sazani Associates, has been included as an ESD success story for its focus capacity building both inside and outside the classroom.

ERLAFS aims to develop shared learning opportunities between secondary and primary school in Wales and Zanzibar and to foster the professional development of teachers in support of poverty reduction. The project utilises a cluster model to facilitate the linking, with a primary and secondary school cluster in each country. This enables the Welsh schools to have an individual partner school in Zanzibar as well as being part of a cluster in Wales, ensuring on-going peer support. External funding has facilitated reciprocal visits and workshops which have enabled teachers from both continents to work closely together in identifying resources and materials which can be used in both places as well as producing new resource materials. One of the participating teachers from Wales said: “Our partnership with Zanzibar has enhanced the global dimension in subjects across the curriculum. This is real life global citizenship.”
In June 2008, UNESCO Associated Schools in the UK hosted a seminar on school linking and partnerships, building on the ERLAFS partnership, bringing together educators from UK and Zanzibar to share experiences. Please see the attachment dropdown for the report from the seminar.
