UK UNESCO Youth Forum delegates announced
Isabel Bottoms and Maryam Saghir will be travelling to UNESCO headquarters this month to represent the UK at the 7th UNESCO Youth Forum. They will be joining delegations of nearly 150 countries to exchange views and identify shared opportunities to address today’s global challenges.
Maryam Saghir is currently studying International Relations and Politics at the University of Lincoln. Maryam is actively involved in student affairs and currently is her University’s student union Liberation Officer and the National Union of Students (NUS) Black Students’ Campaign LGBT Women’s Officer. She has also been Vice President of the Islamic Society and is a member of the LGBT society. Through these and other roles she supports the representation, participation and inspiration of her fellow students and youth, particularly around interfaith and LGBT issues.
Isabel Bottoms is currently studying law in Bristol with the aim of focusing on environmental law in the future. She is actively involved in environmental youth NGOs and projects, helping to educate and empower young people to enable them to act on issues that are important to them. Isabel recently returned from Mongolia where she worked on a skills share between Welsh and Mongolian youth on environmental issues. She is chair of Dyfodol, Wales’s youth forum for sustainability issues. She is also co-founder of UN fair play, a group formed to support underrepresented Government Delegations at the UN climate negotiations (UNFCCC).
The UNESCO Youth Forum is a biennial conference that brings together youth from around the world to exchange views and identify shared opportunities to address global problems within UNESCO’s mandate. At the Forum, delegates will share their experiences and seek ways that UNESCO can use its mandate to promote a better future for humankind. The outcome from the Forum will be considered by the UNESCO General Conference, which includes representatives of UNESCO’s 193 Member States.
Isabel and Maryam were selected following an open call for applications and a multi-staged review process. A large volume of quality applications were received.
