Water Policy and Science

Today, 1 in 6 people in the world do not have access to clean water.

Through its Water for Life Decade (2005-2015), the United Nations is working to meet the Millennium Development Goals to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015 and to put a stop to the unsustainable exploitation of water resources.

At the World Summit in Johannesburg in 2002, two other goals were adopted:

  • to aim to develop integrated water resource management and water efficiency plans by 2005
  • to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people who do not have access to basic sanitation.

To support these global goals, in recent years the UK National Commission for UNESCO (UKNC) Scotland Committee has focused on water treatment and sanitation, water quality and water management in International Development.

Scotland’s UNESCO-IHP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee is a global-leader in water policy and is a central partner to the UKNC’s work in this area. The UKNC in Scotland supports the activities of the Centre, such as an interactive online event focused on Hydrology, Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) river basins in Scotland.
