Working Group for Input to Development of UNESCO's Science Programmes
Chair: Professor Alec Boksenberg
The Working Group for Input to Development of UNESCO’s Science Programmes was formed in response to a resolution adopted at UNESCO’s October 2005 General Conference to undertake an overall review of its Natural Sciences and Social and Human Sciences Programmes. The UK National Commission for UNESCO encourages ongoing strategic review of the content and priorities of UNESCO’s Sciences Programmes – including within the context of UNESCO’s overarching priorities for sub-Saharan Africa and gender equality.
The Working Group aims to contribute to implementing a forward-looking strategic framework for UNESCO’s Science Programmes, placing appropriate emphasis on emerging trends and new priorities, reinforcing the essential role of the sciences in tackling poverty and ensuring that new forms of knowledge are produced and exploited.
It provides the Sciences Committee with assessments and reflections on the development of UNESCO’s Science Programmes - in the context of UNESCO’s delivery of the Overall Review Committee recommendations, emerging trends and new priorities, and wider UN reform - to help ensure that the UK National Commission’s position on UNESCO Programmes is duly promoted and represented. It also contributes to any formal consultations for the evolution of UNESCO’s Medium Term Strategy (34 C/4) and preparation of the Draft Programme and Budget (35 C/5), including the National Commissions Regional Consultation.
