World Teachers Day 2010 - Recovery Begins with Teachers

Each year, World Teachers’ Day is an opportunity to pay homage to teachers, to the impact they have and to attract attention to the key role they play in the endeavour to attain the Education for All (EFA) goals. To celebrate the profession and bring attention to its state on a global level, UNESCO is hosting events at its Paris headquarters on 5 October 2010 that highlight the role that teachers play in reconstruction and recovery from crises of all kinds – natural, humanitarian, social and economic. In London, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) is hosting an event 'Achieving Education for All' on 6th Oct at Hamilton House from 5.00pm to 8.00pm.

As teachers are crucial to sustainable recovery and growth in all post-conflict and emergency situations, the theme of this year’s celebrations is RECOVERY BEGINS WITH TEACHERS.

A photographic exhibition, TRIBUTE TO TEACHERS, focusing on teachers and their recovery projects around the world, will also be launched on 5 October. View the exhibit online, or at UNESCO headquarters in Paris through 19 November 2010.

To mark the day, a joint message has been issued by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and UNICEF, UNDP, ILO and the General Secretary of Education International.
