Literacy

Following the 2006 EFA Global Monitoring Report entitled Literacy for All, the Committee increasingly focus on the global literacy situation.

In an initial two-stage discussion forum in the UK in 2005 and 2006, the Committee, together with partner organisations - the UK Forum for International Education and Training (UKFIET) and the British Association for Literacy in Development (BALID) - explored the global literacy situation, focusing on the GMR’s findings and discussed approaches to policy and to the practice of literacy programmes and how to share best practice.

As a result of the collaboration, a Literacy Group was formed in 2006 of which the UK National Commission’s Education Committee is a member. The Literacy Group is a consortium of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) which focuses on advocating, promoting, influencing and developing more and better adult and youth literacies in international development. Through the Literacy Group, the Education Committee pursues its focus on raising awareness of the importance of literacy in contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
