Science and technology are essential for attaining peace and achieving poverty eradication and sustainable development. Through its sciences programmes, UNESCO aims to be a catalyst to enable Member States to address the multidimensional aspects related to peace and poverty, while promoting a dialogue among different cultures and knowledge systems.
UNESCO promotes equal access to scientific and technical knowledge and basic services through appropriate technologies, leading to better living standards, especially for the excluded segments of societies. Guided by internationally agreed development goals, including the MDGs, UNESCO focuses on the needs of Africa, women, youth, indigenous peoples, the least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS).
UNESCO encourages access for people to benefit from and participate in the production, sharing and application of scientific knowledge and to activate South-South cooperation.
UNESCO with its science mandate will be the primary advocate within the UN system for the transformative power of scientific knowledge in support of peace, poverty eradication and sustainable development by fostering dialogue, cooperation, networking, capacity-building as well as knowledge-sharing with the scientific community, decision-makers, and civil society, globally, regionally and at the country level.

The Commission's Natural Sciences Committee was formed in 2005 and brings together a group of 26 experts covering a broad range of scientific fields.
The Committee is chaired by Professor Alec Boksenberg (nominated by The Royal Society and also Chair of the UK National Commission), with Professor Ernest Shannon (nominated by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers) as deputy chair.
The Committee’s current focus of activity is on supporting the implementation of review recommendations for UNESCO’s Science Programmes; supporting increased cooperation and coordination among the UNESCO Intergovernmental /International Scientific Programmes (ISPs); supporting S&T capacity building in developing countries; and supporting gender in science.
The Committee has formed working groups on: (1) Review of UNESCO's Science Programmes, (2) Science in Africa; (3) Coordination of the 4 UNESCO Internatinal/Intergovernmental Scientific Programmes (IHP, MAB, IGCP, IOC) in the UK; (4) Improving Access to Scientific Information.
