Scotland Committee

With the support of the Scottish Government, a Scotland Committee of the UK National Commission was created in October 2006 to facilitate activity and coordination in Scotland.

The Committee has 20 members and a wider network, with Joanne Orr (Chief Executive, Museums Galleries Scotland) as Chair; and John Francis (Royal Society of Edinburgh) as vice Chair.

In 2007-2008, the Scotland Committee was formally constituted and provided funding to three projects.

INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE IN SCOTLAND

Project led by the Museums Galleries Scotland (previously Scottish Museums Council), in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council and the Gaelic Unit of the Scottish Government, to undertake an initial scoping and mapping of Scotland’s ICH. The project will allow Scotland to begin to raise awareness of ICH by helping to inform future projects in this area by highlighting expertise and identifying strengths and good practice in supporting ICH where it exists.

WATER TREATMENT AND RENEWABLE ENERGY

Project led by the University of Edinburgh to focus on the development of a feasibility study (in Ghana) of solar-powered membrane-filtration technology for the purification of contaminated water in a functional community. In the longer term this process will be applicable to any developing country.

ADA EARLY EDUCATION PROJECT

Project led by Let us Shine Africa to provide early education to nursery and primary school children from poor rural communities and offer support to the largely young parents of these children.
