UNESCO Associated Schools
Project Network (ASPnet) - UK
|
The UNESCO Associated Schools Network Project (ASPnet) is a network of committed schools worldwide engaged in fostering and delivering quality education in pursuit of peace, liberty, justice and human development in order to meet the pressing educational needs of children and young people throughout the world.
Launched by UNESCO in 1953 with 33 secondary schools in 15 Member States, ASPnet now includes some 7,793 institutions at all levels in 175 countries with 10 flagship projects.
The main emphasis of the ASPnet is on integrating international elements into the regular curriculum, rather than to treat them as separate subjects. ASPnet schools are encouraged to conduct pilot projects on four main themes of study covering a wide range of interrelated sub-topics. The point of departure should be issues relevant to the student’s own environment, concerns, and aspirations:
- Education for Sustainable Development
- Intercultural Learning
- Peace, Human Rights and Democracy
- World Concerns and the Role of the United Nations
ASPNet and the UK
The UK re-joined ASPnet in 2005. The Council for Education in World Citizenship (CEWC) provided the UK National Coordinator for the project until November 2007. [click here for more history] The UK National Coordinator is now based at the UK National Commission for UNESCO Secretariat.
Official launch of the project in the UK took place at the UK National Commission's inaugural Annual Conference on 17 June 2006.
First ASPnet Annual Conference took place in November 2007 at the University of Birmingham.
There are currently 35 UNESCO Associated schools in the UK, taking part in projects around one or more of the above four themes.
