The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs projects deal with training and research activities in UNESCO major programmes sectors. Since its creation in 1992, the Programme has developed from some 17 Chairs to over 600 established Chairs and interuniversity networks.
Projects are located at over 600 institutions in over 120 countries and involve academics, scholars and graduate students, as well as key partners from civil society and the economic sector. Over the last five years these partners have brought some US$30 million towards UNITWIN projects, a sum six times greater than UNESCO’s own funding.
In the UK, there are currently 10 UNESCO Chairs. Professor W. John Morgan (UNESCO Chairholder at the University of Nottingham) is the coordinator of the UNESCO Chairs Group in the UK National Commission, aimed at collaborating closely in activities and widening the network in the UK with priorities in the fields of Natural and Human Sciences, in Engineering, Culture and Communications.
