World Heritage
UNESCO seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
|
Background
The UK ratified the 1972 World Heritage Convention in 1984. To date, 184 countries have ratified the Convention.
By ratifying the Convention, the UK Government has agreed to:
- identifying and nominating properties on their national territory to be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List
- ensuring that a property is protected
- ensuring that a management plan is produced and kept up to date
- protecting the World Heritage values of the properties inscribed
- providing periodical update to the World Heritage Committee on the state of the properties
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is the Whitehall lead on World Heritage.
So far, there are 28 UK properties inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Our Work in this Field
The Culture Committee works closely with DCMS and other partners towards the effective implementation of the World Heritage Conventions in the UK by providing expert analysis and advice and acting as coordinator and facilitator on specific matters.
We act as a source of information on World Heritage related matters in the UK, especially in responding to and directing public enquiries.
We respond to Government Inquiries and/or Consultations on World Heritage matters; and coordinate and encourage other organisations to do so.
