Process overseen by: UK National Commission for UNESCO
To become a Category 2 Centre in the UK, the UK National Commission for UNESCO submits a proposal based on the strength of the Institute’s specialisation in one of UNESCO’s fields of competence, to be approved at the UNESCO General Conference.
Category 2 Centres and Institutes are associated with UNESCO through formal arrangements, though they are not legally part of the Organisation.
Through capacity-building knowledge sharing and research, they provide a valuable and unique contribution to the implementation of UNESCO’s strategic programme objectives for the benefits of Member States.
The Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science, based at the University of Dundee, is the only UNESCO Category 2 Centre in the UK and its competence in water law, policy and science is recognised as a vital resource by numerous countries and organisations around the world.
