Last month saw the launch of #GeoparkHour on Twitter. Every Tuesday at 1300 UTC, Global Geoparks worldwide and their local partners are encouraged to share the best examples of their work promoting geological heritage and supporting sustainable economic development through eco-tourism.
The initiative was launched by the coordinating team behind the 7th International Conference on Geoparks that is due to take place at the English Riviera Geopark in September next year. It is intended to raise the profile of the UK’s seven Global Geoparks and highlight the synergy between Global Geoparks worldwide.
Since its launch, the campaign has been a huge success, receiving over 500 posts, a reach of 258k twitter users and over one million impressions in only its second week. Geoparks in Japan, Italy and Canada are among several other countries that have joined #GeoparksHour, as it continues to grow.
David Randall, Conference Director for the 2016 International Global Geoparks Conference said:
“We started #GeoparkHour to raise general awareness of the excellent work done by Global Geoparks and their partners. Although it is early days, the engagement so far has been astonishing so clearly this is a forum appreciated by the Geoparks and we hope it will go from strength to strength as more join in”.
