Applications are open for L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Fellowships

Applications are open for the UK & Ireland L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science Fellowships. Now in its ninth year, the Fellowships recognise the achievements and contributions of outstanding women in science across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, providing them with practical and financial support to help further their research.

The Fellowships, which are provided through a partnership between L’Oréal UK & Ireland and the UK National Commission for UNESCO, with the support of the Royal Society, will be awarded in June 2016 to five outstanding women in science in the early stages of their career to enable and/or facilitate promising scientific research. The Fellowships are tenable at any UK or Irish university or research institute to support a 12-month period of postdoctoral research in any area of life, physical and computer sciences, engineering and mathematics.

The Fellowships are designed to provide practical help for the scientists to undertake research in their chosen fields. Winners may choose to use their flexible financial support in any way that will support their scientific research, whether it be to purchase scientific equipment, child care costs or travel costs. Another important element of the Fellowship programme is the support, training and networking opportunities that it provides. The UKNC explores the value of the Fellowships in its new research on the Wider Value of UNESCO to the UK. This highlights how the Fellowships support women in science to continue with their research, can help Fellows take their career to the ‘next level’ and provides a platform for women in science to become science ambassadors through initiatives like Soapbox Science, which with the support of L’Oréal UK & Ireland was established by two former Fellows.
