On 22 January 2019, at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Paris, the final version of the nomination dossier of the transnational serial nomination “The Great Spas of Europe” for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List was signed.
The nomination was signed by representatives of all seven participating State Parties – Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with the presence of the Mayors of the component spa towns and cities.
The website will be submitted on 23 January 2019, in due time to the World Heritage Centre in Paris.
This ambitious project highlights the importance and outstanding values of spa culture and architecture as a specific European phenomenon. This outstanding group of 11 spa towns and cities comprises: – Baden bei Wien (Austria); Spa (Belgium); Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Lázně and Mariánské Lázně (Czech Republic); Vichy (France); Bad Ems, Baden-Baden and Bad Kissingen (Germany); Montecatini Terme (Italy); and the City of Bath (United Kingdom).
Their mutual cooperation has been the basis for the preparation and elaboration of a nomination project since 2012, involving many international experts and partners at all levels. The Czech Republic greatly appreciates the fact that it was asked to be the coordinator and guarantor of the entire nomination.
This proposal for inclusion on UNESCO´s World Heritage List will be assessed during the next evaluation cycle of new World Heritage nominations during the years 2019 and 2020. The next steps for nomination should then be decided by the Intergovernmental World Heritage Committee at its meeting next year.
