UNESCO to play key partner role in Year of Sustainable Tourism

The United Nations has designated 2017 as the Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in recognition of the potential of the tourism industry to contribute to the fight against poverty and foster mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue.

While the Year is organised by the World Tourism Organization (WTO), UNESCO has been identified as a key partner.  Is expected to draw attention to the potential of tourism to contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as address the challenges associated with it.

UNESCO has released a statement on its proposed events and activities with Member States, and has also confirmed it will work with the WTO to host the World Conference on Fostering Sustainable Development, in Muscat, Oman in December 2017.
